Laser Hair Removal Treatments

Understanding hair removal

The laser is one of the world's most advanced treatment for the effective removal of unwanted hair. You may alreadyknow that just about your entire body is covered withhair. Some is coarse and dark, and some so fine andpale that it is not visible to the naked eye. But when darker, coarser hair appears in places you do not likeor expect, it might be the time to consider hair removal with laser. In the past, the usual remedies for unwantedhair were plucking, shaving, waxing or chemicaldepilatories. Some are painful, some are messy, and all are only temporary.

For long-term hair removal, electrolysis is popular and effective but can be painful and slow. Hair by hair, an electric current passes through a needle to destroy the hair's roots ability to grow. It typically takes months or even years of regular visits - even for small areas, like the upper lip. Risks include electrical shock, infection and pitting or scarring.

Now there is an effective solution. The laser is the state-of-the-art system specially designed to remove unwanted hair faster and less painfully than electrolysis.

Understanding laser treatment

A laser produces a beam of highly concentrated light. Different types of laser produce different colours of light. The colour of light produced by a particular laser is the key to its effective on hair follicles. The pigment located in hair follicles absorbs the light emitted by the laser. The laser pulses for a fraction of a second, just enough to vaporise the pigment, disabling several follicles at a time to eliminate or significantly impede the hair's regrowth. Usually between six and eight hair reduction treatments, within a 4/6 (COOLGLIDE) and 6/8 (LIGHTSHEER) week period are needed to give you smooth, hair-free skin. The exact number of treatments will depend on the thickness of the hair, the area being treated and the current growth cycle of individual hairs. In any area, hairs that are actively growing are most affected by laser, while hairs that are regressing or dormant will be less affected and may need additional treatments. After treatment, you may experience what appears to be a regrowth of hair; in fact, this is hair being shed as a result of the treatment. You should not wax or pluck your hair at this stage, though shaving is acceptable. Laser treats in seconds, an area that would take over an hour with electrolysis. Unlike some other systems, it is safe and effective on every part of the body, from the fine hair on a woman's upper lip to the coarse hair on a man's back.

Possibly the best laser hair removal system available - and it is suitable for even highly sensitive areas such as the nipples, bikini line and full pubic.

What you can expect

The length of a laser session may be a few minutes to an hour or more, depending on the size of the area being treated. Because the laser tends to treat hair follicles that are in an active growth phase, more than one treatment may be required to disable hair follicles that subsequently enter this growth phase. However, one treatment may result in a significant enough improvement that it may be all you desire or require.

The laser treatment itself can cause a slightly tingling sensation. Most patients tolerate the procedure well. But because some areas of the body are more sensitive than others, topical anesthesia is always available.

The appearance of the treated area immediately after a laser session will vary from patient to patient depending on the extent of treatment. Immediate after-effects, if any, are minor. They may include redness and swelling, which disappear in a short time. Most people return to normal activity right away. We will be happy to tell you more about your treatment and what you can expect during your consultation.

Hair's active regrowth phase is called anagen. During anagen, the hair contains an abundance of melanin.

Catagen is the regression phase when the lower part of the hair stops growing but is not shed, and follicle is reabsorbed.

The resting phase is called telogen, during which the old hair falls out in preparation for the development of new hair.
